Testing Power Electronic Systems Efficiently

With today’s increased incorporation of power electronics and switching devices in overall system design, there is a growing need for accurate measurement of both the power behavior of the applied power electronics and other inter-related electrical and physical parameters. My article in Power Electronics Europe • February/March 2016 describes the types of instruments available for these types of measurements and the selection criteria.

Meeting the accuracy demands of measurements on alternative energy systems

The demand for increased energy efficiency in solar energy production and other forms of alternative energy generation is driving the development of more accurate measuring instruments in order to provide an exact quantitative analysis of the savings that can be achieved. My article in Global Solar & Alternative Energies • Fall 2015 describes how to confirm the smallest improvements in efficiency for such things as solar inverters.

Voltage Measurements

I need to measure power or efficiency. What should I use? An Oscilloscope, a Power Analyser or a Precision Power Scope?

Many types of instrument can be used to measure power. This master class video will help you to understand their differences and to identify the most suitable solution for your application or stage in development or testing.

Achieving better resolution, accuracy and signal clarity with an oscilloscope

Oscilloscopes and related measuring instruments are often selected on the basis of their specified resolution but, as my article in Electronic Specifier Test & Measurement Magazine shows, there are a number of other factors that need to be taken into account to achieve the optimum results in terms of accuracy and signal clarity.

Real-time maths functions enhance Yokogawa DL850 ScopeCorder waveform recording

In this article in the Electronics Weekly test and measurement supplement in June 2013, I describe how the Yokogawa DL850 ScopeCorder is used as a measurement system for real-time calculations of power and efficiency in power electronics devices. Examples include the display of the measurement results of a rotating body in polar coordinates in real time: for example when measuring the wobble of a rotating body, the measurement of transient power and the measurement of the electrical angle of motors.
